What are the Cluster C Personality Disorders? Categorizing Personality Disorders into Clusters & How to Treat Cluster C Disorders
Cluster C personality disorders are characterized by pervasive patterns of anxious and fearful thinking and behavior. This cluster includes three specific disorders:
Avoidant Personality Disorder: Individuals with this disorder often experience extreme sensitivity to criticism or rejection, feelings of inadequacy, and social inhibition. They may avoid social interactions due to intense fear of disapproval or embarrassment.
Dependent Personality Disorder: This disorder is marked by a pervasive and excessive need to be taken care of, leading to submissive and clinging behaviors. Individuals may have difficulty making decisions without excessive advice and reassurance from others and may feel uncomfortable or helpless when alone.
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD): Not to be confused with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), OCPD involves a preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control. Individuals may be excessively devoted to work and productivity, to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships.
Treatment for Cluster C personality disorders typically involves psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which aims to help individuals recognize and change maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to manage co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression.
